Annotation

Introduction:
This is the reference bootleg for the seven broadcasts made from Birdland, NYC 1961/10/21 to 1962/10/26, by WADO AM (1280) in the Symphony Sid Show.
Taped by Boris Rose, from which he made acetates in order to release on bootleg labels (Alto, Ozone, Session Disc, Yadeon...).
Nothing has been legitimately released so far.
Recently, the complete set surfaced - mastered from four reels (see reel 1 reel 2 reel 3 reel 4) made from Rose's acetates.
Most circulating packages have been equalized with Soundforge, burnt on three discs and ripped.
Sound quality is decent, with some hiss.
Be aware that available discographic informations have some caveats (especially http://jazzdisco.org).
Reference is Esa Onttonen (2004/08) and Priestley (1983).

Release History:
#4 & #16 were never released. So far, the most complete edition was a very rare 4xLP limited edition (BAT 5-8).
Various other editions had the tracks either scrambled into unrelated material, or one or the other of the broadcasts, including editing, and frequent mistitling and misattributions.

Charles Mingus - 8 Top Tracks (Frequenz 044-011, CD): #1, #8, #26

? (Music Room Special MRS5046, LP): #20-23

Additional:
#1-3:
Rahsaan Roland Kirk plays stritch (modified alto sax) and manzello (modified soprano sax).
Some resources give Lateef on flute. I believe he is on tenor sax instead.
Frequenz 044-011 (relayed by other resources) incorrectly list Roland Hanna on piano and Charles Mingus on bass.
#1 is listed as Blue Cee, and introduced by Mingus as such - while indeed it has no relations with Blue Cee.
Esa Onttonen thinks that "this composition was later recorded on November 6, 1961 for Atlantic and is one of the unissued tracks that were destroyed in the Atlantic Records vault fire in February 1978."
#1 solo order is Kirk, Mingus, Lateef, Knepper.
#4-#7:
Frequenz 044-011 and Jazz View COD 028 (relayed by others) list Byard as pianist - which Priestley denies (source Onttonen).
#8-10:
Byard wrongly credited as pianist again.
#11-15:
There is some dispute whether Herman Wright doubles Grimes on bass. Priestley thinks so, while Onttonen and Mingus announcement suggest not.
#16-19:
Bass and piano for #19 are unknown.
#20-23:
#20 (also #27) is based on I Can't Get Started (Vernon Duke).
Session Disc and Jazz View list #20 as The Search, #21 as King Fish, #22 as Moonboy
#24-27:
First ever played version of O.P..
Don Butterfield may have played on these, though not announced neither audible... (Onttonen)
