Description:
Heaven's Lathe are proud to present this brand new EP by Toronto based musician, vocalist and producer Devi McCallion.
She is a key figure in contemporary avant pop. Restlessly creative, McCallion records under her own name, as well as numerous aliases, including Girls Rituals, Anarchy 99, Mom, and Cats Millionaire. She’s also released two superb collaborative albums with Australian artist Katie Dey. Meanwhile, along with Ada Rook, she operated as one half of the much lauded Black Dresses.
“The sound is moody and serrated, yet littered with irresistible hooks – made all the more appealing for having been rendered by sick machines.” – Dangerous Minds
“Nuanced, heartfelt and brutal noise-pop.” – Pitchfork
McCallion’s unique mix of savage industrial textures and dazzling pop provides the perfect environment for her commentary on the modern trans experience. In short, she’s one of the underground’s most significant, and indeed necessary voices.
A: 'A Fire That Bridges The World'
With a spacious arrangement and simple monophonic melodies, McCallion short circuits expectations on this fragile and tender instrumental.
B1: 'Project_6'
Brooding yet fizzing with energy, this delicious slice of McCallion noise pop might not sound out of place on her classic Girls Rituals album 'Emergency!'
B2: 'I Want Things To Be Beautiful'
Ending the EP on a true high, this tune sees McCallion in optimistic mode, reaching out for new possibilities over an infectious, buzzing groove.
With all three songs mixed and mastered by Katie Dey, incredibly, this Heaven’s Lathe's release is McCallion’s vinyl debut. It proves once again that she is an artist operating completely on her own terms.
Cover art is by music/internet aficionado Marie Acosta (aka 808gum). She considers finding Devi's music one of the best moments in her life; both of them being artists in the diaspora of anime, videogame, and computer art. Growing up Catholic in Venezuela, she struggled with self-expression, sexuality, and her own authenticity, believing it to be a curse, as it brought ostracization, bullying and even witchcraft accusations. "However, working with Devi, I learned how important it is to keep faith no matter how hard life can get."
