"The Ship" is a "folk opera" first performed in March 1971 by a band which was assembled for that purpose. The band took on the name "The Ship" as well. The work was recorded in 1972 on Elektra. A subtitle, "A Contemporary Folk Music Journey" was added to the album cover. Some metadata sources list the subtitle as the album main title, and interpret "The Ship" as only the name of the group, but this is incorrect. The band went on to release several more albums, keeping the group name "The Ship". (Source: the group's official bio).
