Outside

"Outside" is a song recorded by American singer-songwriter and record producer Marian Renta released as a single on September 5, 2025. The single's release was accompanied by the song's lyric video. It is a cover of the Mariah Carey song originally recorded and released by Carey for her 1997 album, Butterfly. "Outside" is a pop-soul record with gospel influence and lyrics centered around feeling like an outsider in a divisive world. In parallel to Carey's troubling experience as a biracial child, Renta recalls difficulty in finding belonging as a child due to her ethnic identity. Raised in all Black or White neighborhoods in southeast Virginia, Renta's Puerto Rican ancestry was often a source of criticism and alienation. Renta has stated Carey's "Outside" was a deeply personal song she leaned on for healing and growth. Renta has credited "Outside" with training her in soulful inflections, runs, and melisma.
